It seems that ever since Prince William gave Kate Middleton his mother, Princess Diana’s ring, as an engagement ring, everyone wants vintage rings as an engagement ring as well. Princess Diana’s ring was made from an 18 carat sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds and was said to have cost around £30,000 back in 1981. It was mocked by a lot of people then because Princess Diana chose a seemingly ordinary ring instead of having one custom made, which was customary back then. It was originally inherited by Prince Harry, but he decided that he wanted the future queen of England to have it, so he gave it to Prince William so he can give it to Kate.
Today, several celebrities who have been engaged recently have been seen sporting antique rings as their engagement rings. Perhaps inspired by Prince William’s act or perhaps they just prefer the elegant feel of an old ring. Elegance and unique, that is what antique rings are like.
Art deco rings are elegant and vintage. Most antique rings are one of a kind because they are custom made. Most often than not, vintage rings are passed on from generation to generation. The only time vintage rings are not hand me downs is if it was bought in an antique store, custom made or it was auctioned. Sometimes jewellery find its way into auctions when its previous owners have passed on and it was not inherited by family or the government has gotten hold of it in some way.
