A Few Facts About Diamond Clarity
The term ‘diamond clarity’ is commonly used to refer to the presence or the absence of a number of flaws in a diamond or any other gemstone.
It must be pointed out that finding a diamond that is without flaws is rare yet these flaws cannot be seen with the naked eye but for the magnifying loupe of the discerning jeweler.
There are two kinds of flaws that can affect a diamond’s value namely inclusions and blemishes, where the former is inside the diamond while the latter is present on a diamond’s exterior surface.
And since diamond clarity affects costs, there are certain grades that have created by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Some of these grades include Fl (Flawless), IF (Internally Flawless), VVS1 & VVS2 (very very slightly included), VS1 & VS2 (very slightly included), SI1 & SI2 (slightly included) and I1 & I2 & I3 (included).
While acronym Fl suggests that the diamond is perfect, I1 & I2 & I3 can suggest that there are inclusions that can affect the overall transparency and brilliance of the diamond.
With that said, most of these imperfections are infinitesimal, and cannot be seen normally but most of all, does not affect the way a diamond looks on an individual, except for those diamonds that fall in the “I” categories.
Keeping this in mind, there’s another factor that you must take into consideration and that involves the location of the flaw, since this will determine whether or not they are more noticeable or not while also affecting their durability as well. However, when in doubt, ask your jeweler for advice!
