Jewelry clasps are more than just parts that are used to join two ends of a necklace. While some of these clasps are for function only, there are others that are a part of the overall jewelry design.
With that said, here are 4 types of jewelry clasps:
#1: Spring Ring Clasps
Used to keep anklets, necklaces and bracelets secure, the spring ring clasp will open when you push back a lever that slides along a circular ring. Very tiny clasps of this type are difficult for people to open by themselves.
#2: Lobster Claw Clasps
If you look at the design of these clasps, they do resemble a lobster’s claw. However, this type is easier to open than the spring ring type but just as secure. It is also the reason why several anklets, bracelets and necklaces use this type of clasp.
#3: Box Clasps
Box clasps are two-pieced clasps that can be opened when you push down an exterior lever on a piece of metal that are wedge-shaped. They aren’t as strong as lobster claw clasps but are easier to use. You can find decorative or plain clasps and in a variety of shapes and sizes. In some cases, you can extra safety clasps added to this type of clasps.
#4: Toggle Clasps
These are also two-piece clasps that are attached to either sides of jewelry. Usually, one end forms a circle or into another shape with an open center. They are used for bracelets and anklets but some jewelry artisans use them in necklaces as well. Be advised that these type of clasps aren’t as secure as lock-type clasps.
